Bruxism, that’s tooth gnawing, means involuntarily rapid, periodic tightening of teeth and slow-motion gnashing, either during sleep or in the waking state.
Mild bruxism is very common and there are many reasons for it. The reason of excessive biting may include bite disorders, hereditary predisposition, and stress. Severe and frequent bruxism can damage teeth and their enamel or cause a variety of oral pains, ulcers of the oral mucosa, ear pain, tinnitus, dizziness, or headache. In the case of persistent and intense bruxism, it is also good to consult a dentist.
Safe operation
Botulinum is used as a medicine for the treatment. Good results have been obtained from the treatment of bruxism, as the medicine affects the functioning of the neural joints, and thus reduces the overactive function of the masseter muscle.
The medicine is injected in small doses into the masticatory muscles on both sides of the face. The effect begins after 2-4 days, after which the occlusal muscles relax and the gnashing of teeth ceases.
Follow-up treatment
The medicine can be added two weeks after the procedure if it is deemed necessary. The side effects of the treatment are minor and most often they are local, as the injection sites may be irritated for a few days. Treatment can be renewed later.
